About CTIF

CTIF_Italy Lab was opened on September 28, 2006as a part of an international research network conceived by Prof. Ramjee Prasad (Aalborg University, Denmark).

The CTIF – Center for TeleInFrastructures network includes other selected centers in  Europe, Asia and US, whose research is focused in the development of infrastructures, technologies, devices and interdisciplinary applications of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

CTIF nodes are in Denmark (Università di Aalborg with a branch in Copenhagen, 2004 e 2008), Italy (University of Rome Tor Vergata, 2006), India (University of Kolkota e Mumbai, 2007 e 2009), Japan (at YRP, Yokosuka Park, 2008) and USA (Princeton, 2011), Southern-Eastern Europe in Greece (2012).

The aim of the CTIF_Italy node is to coordinate heterogeneous research groups in order to push the limits of the applications of wireless communications and make the “ICT for life” paradigm a reality.

Nowadays, the CTIF_Italy node includes the Department with the core competences on ICT (the Department of Electronic Engineering) but also the Department of Management Engineering and Departments from Faculty of Law, Faculty of Physics, Faculty of Medicine. So, ICT technology and all the applications leading towards the “Quality of Life” paradigm, are under the same “umbrella”.

The research lines implemented by the CTIF are summarized below:
  • Management
    1. Destination Governance and Management, Tourism Sustainable Development Strategy, Digital Tourism
    2. Models of enhancement of the historical-cultural and natural heritage of territorial systems with a focus on governance and management models for businesses and institutions at local and multi-local level
    3. Knowledge management, capacity building and digitalization of the processes of complex social organizations
    4. Structuring and managing models of technology transfer for the creation of tourism-oriented spin-offs/start-ups based on university research
    5. Business creation, Business plan, Female and student entrepreneurship
    6. Project Management, Development Impact Evaluation
  • Urban design and regeneration, Heritage
    1. Protection and enhancement of cultural and architectural heritage
    2. Urban regeneration and enhancement of the architectural heritage
    3. Urban design, recovery and reuse of the existing heritage
  • Environment and Energy
    1. Smart city/town/villages - Integrating the ICT infrastructure into the design of the home spaces and the use of materials
    2. Management of natural and non-natural emergencies (in particular, seismic events)
    3. Transport and smart technologies
  • Health
    1. Telemedicine applications for small villages based on smart solutionsUse of radio frequency signals to create diagnostic devices in the healthcare sector
    2. Digitization and application of artificial intelligence systems to Clinical (Dentistry, Orthopedics and Traumatology) and diagnostic (laboratory medicine and image techniques) sciences
    3. Monitoring systems for training and sports performance
  • Law
    1. Computerization, Legislation and Regulation in the transmission of data within the Public Administration
    2. Security and guarantee of confidentiality (privacy) in the collection and transmission of data
  • Space
    1. Application of GNSS systems to automotive and trains: improving data security and integrity
    2. Use of SDN/NFV paradigms in High Throughput Satellites (HTS) contexts

Due to its highly interdisciplinary nature, the Center is set on a unique model within the CTIF-Global international network of which it is a part https://ctifglobalcapsule.org/. The CTIF-Global network is a global non-profit organization that stimulates cross/inter-disciplinary collaboration with a robust academic and industrial research network. Here are the research centers that are part of the network.

The international attitude is also reflected in the Steering Board composition which is made up of 18 experts (including the Coordinator); 4 of them have been added in 2019 (5 are foreigners). The Steering Board meets annually at the University "Tor Vergata" in Rome at the CTIF headquarters in order to share the Centre's development objectives and strategies through joint design activities with the universities and organizations to which they belong, expanding the application of research. It, therefore, expands the steering board components to institutions/institutes/companies, and in particular: Leonardo Company, Defense, Telecom-Bretagne, IEEE, Airbus, Inmarsat, Bocconi University.
